Protecting Black Women from Toxic Chemicals in our Beauty Products
CLEAN BEAUTY JUSTICE
Sign your salon up for a Free Clean Beauty Justice Training!
We’re offering a free in-salon training designed specifically for Black hairstylists who want to learn more about how to talk to their clients about the importance of using products that don’t harm our health.
As a stylist, you are that girl — the trusted expert your clients turn to for advice and glam! You have a powerful opportunity to not only keep their hair laid, but also protect their health by helping them make safer choices. That’s where GPE comes in, we’ll teach you how to have those conversations in a way that’s confident, clear, and impactful.
About The Campaign
THE MANE ISSUE (TMI) is a targeted initiative focused on addressing the health risks posed by Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) found in hair and beauty products predominantly used by Black women. The program seeks to educate and empower Black hairstylists, who hold influential roles in the community, to raise awareness about the dangers of EDCs and promote healthier practices.
WHAT ARE ENDOCRINE-DISRUPTIVE CHEMICALS?
Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are substances in the environment (air, soil, or water supply), food sources, personal care products, and manufactured products that interfere with the normal function of your body's endocrine system.
EDCs can disrupt many different hormones, which is why they've been linked to numerous adverse health outcomes including alterations in sperm quality and fertility, abnormalities in sex organs, endometriosis, early puberty, altered nervous system function, immune function, certain cancers, respiratory problems, metabolic issues, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular problems, growth, neurological and learning disabilities, and more.
WHAT IS GPE DOING ABOUT EDCs?
Black Hair Care Campaign
In 2023, we partnered with brands, beauty influencers, and organizations on a digital media campaign that educated more than 40,000 people about toxic chemicals often found in our hair products.
Black Hair Care Pop-Ups
We hosted pop-ups all across the city of Atlanta to help spread awareness about EDCs, answer questions, and give away healthy hair products.
Trainings
TMI’s approach includes salon-based pop-up trainings, where Black hairstylists receive tailored, one-hour sessions on the impact of EDCs and strategies for minimizing exposure. These sessions not only inform but also equip hairstylists to become advocates, using a “train-the-trainer” model to share this knowledge with their clients and peers.
Clean Beauty Boxes
We’re partnering with toxic-free beauty brands to distribute 400+ Clean Beauty Boxes that include safe product samples, educational resources about clean beauty, and tons of items to share with their community to try out.
