As part of the Girl + Environment Energy Justice Ambassador Program, Galaz Bibbs hosted a Valentine's day theme event titled “Gal's Talk: Energy Injustice Love & Learn” on February 27, 2024. Here’s a glimpse into the event from Galaz’s perspective:

Since February is dedicated to love, I wanted to share some love and spread knowledge about energy injustice with the lovely ladies in my life.

For my Independent Outreach project, I hosted a Gal’s Talk: Energy Injustice Love & Learn, event at The Kendrick, a 938 sq ft Airbnb in Atlanta, GA.The event was invite-only, attended by my close friends and family, with 10 guests in total. My attendees were homeowners, renters, and a student, ranging in age from age 22 to 35. I specifically wanted to engage this demographic to show that energy injustice is an ongoing issue affecting our community, no matter where you fall in the room. The Lunch and Learn event provided a combination of entertainment, education, and a call to action for my guests.

Let’s get into the night! Upon arrival, I had the ladies change into a ‘uniform’—aka something a little more cozy. I did this to highlight that it doesn’t matter how we speak, look, or what our background is. If we’re all fighting for the same cause, we can make a statement by showing up and standing in solidarity. The uniform was anything pink! I also placed several candles around the home to symbolize the rising power bills, which are increasing at alarming rates. If we don’t start addressing these issues now, we might all have to rely on candles to light our homes.

For the lunch portion, I served a light meal and plenty of sweet treats. To keep everyone entertained, food, drinks, and games always do the trick! We started with an icebreaker where each person introduced themselves and shared how they know me. Then it was time for the learning portion. I asked all my guests to listen closely, stay open-minded, and hold all questions until the end. I wrote several words on the wall and asked a few of my guests to share their opinions on them. The words were:

  • Injustice

  • Energy

  • Knowledge

  • Love

  • GA Power

  • Increase

When it was my turn, I explained how all of the words were related to the issues we are facing and what Girl+Environment stands for. For the next steps, I asked everyone to pull out their light bills and start tracking them. I provided instructions on ways to use energy more efficiently and how we can spread this knowledge among our family and friends. I also shared tips, such as voting, getting involved in local organizations, and calling GA Power to inquire about billing and power usage.

We not only spoke about the injustice that we have with energy, but a lot of other things that are going on in our community I did get a lot of great responses! So many of my guests weren’t even aware of the issues around energy

injustice.

We not only talked about the energy injustice we’re facing, but also discussed many other issues affecting our community. I received a lot of great responses! Many of my guests weren’t even aware of the energy-related challenges. Overall, it was a super fun event! I also encouraged attendees to sign up for Girl+Environment’s free membership. Gal's Talk was a creative, intimate way to talk about love and energy injustice.
